voi

made this pattern especially for everyone disappointed to find that there is no pattern for
this stripey elephant, made by the clever Dina of Dina's nest on Flickr.
All credit for the original idea must go to Dina, and I am in no way trying to take that away from her.

I did think it would be nice for you to make an elephant of your own, seeing you love it so much. In the spirit of sharing the crochet love, here's another version (or 3) of the beloved stripey elephant, for you to make and keep for your very own.

I have tried to make the pattern and tutorial easy for intermediate crocheters to understand, so many of my students can have a go, solo! Therefore, I've explained as many of the steps as possible. I hope experienced crocheters will forgive the inclusion of information they already know by heart.

The elephant stands at approx 22cm high (to tips of ears) x 26cm long and 14cm wide.

Materials:

Hook AU- 3mm, US- D, UK- 11)
DK (8ply) yarn in your choice of colours.
stuffing
black buttons or black yarn for embroidery eyes
pretty buttons or embellishments of your choice
darning needle
material for ear lining if your choose. A fat 1/4 should be plenty.

I'm an Aussie, though this pattern is written in US terms. I taught myself to crochet using an American book.  UK/AU crocheters:

US sc = UK dc   beg = beginning
US dc = UK tr    fol =  following
ss = slip stitch

Special Notes:

*The beginning chains are counted as the first stitch unless otherwise stated. So, do not work your first stitch into the same space as the beginning chain, unless advised. Some increase rows will ask for this, but it is the exception rather than the rule.

** Inc= work 2 dc in next stitch.

***For the decrease rounds, dc dec = dc the next 2 stitches together through front loops of the stitches only. This makes for a less bulky decrease!

****When making the stripey elephant or the rug for the circus version, join your new colour when you are joining your round (at the very end of the round)

***** In the pattern when I ask you to do an amount of dc's, for example - 4 dc, this means work 1 dc in next 4 stitches along.

EARS x2

Note: It's not necessary to line the ears, they sit well enough without it (see my rainbow elephant), however I have supplied an easy pattern and tutorial for you if you choose to line them.

Rnd 1: Ch5, join to form ring, ch3, 9 dc in ring, join to 3rd ch of beg ch3. (10)

Rnd 2: Ch3 (counts as beginning dc), 3 dc in next, and each dc around to last dc, dc, join to 3rd ch of beg ch3. (26)

Rnd 6: Ch1, 13sc, 2sc in next 10 dc, 14sc, join (48)

Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. weave in all other round ends.
If you are not lining your ears, sew first 2 stitches on either side of ear together (see photo below)

and then sew onto your elephants head. (Use my pics to guide placement)

If you choose to line the ears, here's the guide for you.

EAR LINING x2

Important note:

I am by no means an experienced seamstress or sewing pattern maker. To be honest, I'm a machine sewing beginner. I do things my own way, as I have never had any training. If you have a better way to line the ears, than I am super happy for you to do it your way. This tutorial is designed for other beginners, who need some help along the way, and are happy for a fellow beginner to do the helping.

* Right click on this picture and save. Print ear pattern.

If you can't print out this picture true to size, you may need to reproduce it using the graph method.  Use the 2 squares = 1 cm (high or wide) measurement to guide you.

Cut out printed ear pattern, this does not include seam allowance.

1. Double up your chosen material into two layers, right sides facing, place and pin the pattern. (wrong side faces you)

2.  Cut out ear including a seam allowance of at least 1/2 cm. I then trace around the ear using a tailor's pencil for guidance. You can iron the material if you are not as lazy as fussier than me.

3. Sew around the arc of the ear, there is no need to sew along the straight bottom edge.

4. Finish off, and trim around the edge. Turn inside out. (You may want to iron again now, to make sure the material is flat. I didn't do this, but I know some people are very particular.)  Now the front of the material faces you.

5. Using the pattern to guide you, fold the ear in half, right side together (the side of the material you want to be showing inside the elephant's ear)  and mark the diagonal line.

6. Sew along the marked diagonal line and finish off neatly. Trim close (but not too close) to the sewn line.

7. Place right side of ear lining  over right side of the crocheted ear. You'll need to tuck some of the ear in as you pin around the edges. Make sure you leave the tail of the crocheted ear facing inside the ear. (I did not do this in the photo above, you can see it at the bottom, poking out. When you turn the ear to the correct side, you will use this tail to sew the ear onto the elephant's head.) Start by pinning the bottom, then the very top centre and ease in material around the sides. You will leave a small gap at one side to turn the ear in the right way.

8. Starting at the middle-side of the ear, hand sew the lining to the ear through the material and back loop of each single crochet as pictured above, until you come to the last 6 sc's of the ear. Keeping the sewing cotton connected, turn the ear in the right way, and close the gap. In the above picture you see the green yarn tail is now on the correct side, and I can use it to sew the ear to the head.

9. Using the tail, sew the first single crochet stitches on either side, and then again the next sc's on either side (as pictured), then sew the thread back through a stitch loop to tie off.

10. Repeat above instructions for the second ear, then sew beautifully lined ears to the side of one handsome elephant head! YAY!!

FLOWER and/or BOW

Here's my quick little flower and Bow patterns to choose from for embellishing the elephants head.

Flower:

Beg ch does not count as a stitch. ss= slip stitch

Rnd 1: Ch4, join to form ring, ch1, 6sc in ring, join to first sc. (6)

Rnd 2: Ch1, 2dc in same sp as beg ch, ss into next sc, (ch1, 2 dc, ss into next sc) around, join to beg ch1. Finish off, weave in ends, sew on pretty button to centre of flower and then onto the elephants head.

Bow:

Leaving approx 10cm tail, form a slip knot loop.

Rnd 1: Ch 15, join to form ring, ch 1, sc in each ch loop, around, join to beginning ch 1. (14)

Rnd 2-3: Ch 1, sc in eac sc, around, join to beg ch 1. (14)

Break yarn leaving a long tail for wrapping and sewing.

Holding the beginning tail at the back of the bow (where rounds join), wrap the ending tail firmly around the centre of the bow approx 10 times.

Thread tails to centre back and tie off.

Trim off the short tail, and use the longer one for sewing onto the elephant's head.

BODY

*NOTE special instructions for circus elephant rug/beginning of body, further down page

Note for stripey version: You need to begin with the same colour that you have used on round 23 of the elephant's head, and work the colours in the opposite order, ie, next round will be worked in the colour you've used on round 22 of head, etc... This will ensure your stripes for head and body will line up.

For heart and stripey version:

Rnd 1: Ch 13, 2dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in fol 8ch, 6 dc in last ch. Now, working down opposite side of ch- 8 dc, 3 dc (in same space as beginning ch) join (with new colour for stripey version) to 3rd ch of beg ch3. (28)

Rnd 2: Ch3, Inc in fol 3 dc, 6 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 2 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 6 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, dc, join to 3rd ch of beg ch. (40)

Rnd 3: Ch3, 2 dc, Inc in fol 2 dc, 10 dc, In in fol 2 dc, 6 dc, Inc in fol 2 dc, 10 dc, Inc in fol 2 dc, 3 dc, join. (48)

Rnd 4: Ch3, 3 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 10 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 8 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 10 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 4 dc, join (60)

Rnd 6: Ch3, 4 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 18 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 10 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 18 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 5 dc, join. (80)

*Rnds 7-12: Ch3, dc in each dc, around, join. (6 rounds, 80)

Begin decrease rounds

Rnd 13: Ch3, 4dc, dc dec 3 times,  18 dc, dc dec 3 times, 10dc, dc dec 3 times, 18 dc, dc dec 3 times, 5 dc, join (68)

Rnd 14: Ch3, 4 dc, dc dec, dc, dc dec, 14 dc, dc dec, dc, dc dec, 10dc, dc dec, dc, dc dec, 14 dc, dc dec, dc, dc dec, 5 dc, join (60)

Rnd 15: Ch3,  3 dc, dc dec 3 times, 10 dc, dc dec 3 times, 8 dc, dc dec 3 times, 10 dc, dc dec 3 times, 4 dc, join. (48)

Rnd 16: Ch3, 2 dc, dc dec 2 times, 10 dc, dc dec 2 times, 6 dc, dc dec 2 times, 10dc, dc dec 2 times, 3 dc, join (40)

Rnd 18: Ch1, dc dec, 8 dc, dc 3 together 2 times, 8 dc, dc last 3 dc together, join to beg dc, finish off, leaving long tail for sewing the opening together.

Stuff body firmly without stretching the stitches apart, then sew opening closed through opposite chain front loops.

You're done! Don't attach head to body just yet!

CIRCUS ELEPHANT RUG INSTRUCTIONS

I have special instructions for the rug to make sure it is even. As we work in the round we can often end up with work that is slightly off kilter.  This happens because we're pulling on our work as we go around. This pattern ensures that you'll have a nice straight rug  on the back of your elephant, without blocking.

Choose 4 colours for your rug A, B, C and D

Rnd 1: With Col A: Ch 13, 2dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in fol 8ch, 6 dc in last ch. Now, working down opposite side of ch- 8 dc, 3 dc (in same space as beginning ch) join (with Col B) to 3rd ch of beg ch3, turn.(28)

Rnd 2: Ch3, sk st directly at bottom of ch, dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 6 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 2 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 6 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, join (with Col C) to 3rd ch of beg ch 3, turn. (40)

Rnd 3: 3 dc, Inc in fol 2 dc, 10 dc, In in fol 2 dc, 6 dc, Inc in fol 2 dc, 10 dc, Inc in fol 2 dc, 2 dc, join (with Col D) to 3rd ch of beg ch 3, turn. (48)

Rnd 4: Ch3, sk st directly at bottom of ch, 4 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 10 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 8 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 10 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 3 dc, join  (with Col B) to 3rd ch of beg ch 3, turn.(60)

Rnd 5: Ch3, 5 dc, Inc in fol dc, dc, Inc in fol dc, 14 dc, Inc in fol dc, dc, Inc in fol dc, 10 dc, Inc in fol dc, dc, Inc in fol dc, 14 dc, Inc in fol dc, dc, Inc in fol dc, 4 dc, join (with your Main Colour) to 3rd ch of beg ch 3, turn. (64)

Rnd 6: Ch3, sk st directly at bottom of ch, 4 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 18 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 10 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 18 dc, Inc in fol 3 dc, 5 dc, join, turn. (76)

Before moving on to round 7, go back and work a round of surface slip stitch using Col A working between rounds 5 and 6. (see photo below, surface slip stitch is the dark green edge where the tassels are attached.) Not 100% sure how to do this? Click here for help.

Later you can make mini tassels and attach them evenly around this slip stitch round. Attach by looping them through front loop of slip stitch only. Not sure about making tassels? Here's a handy tassel link.

*Work rounds 7 - 18 from main body pattern, turning at the end of the round no longer required.

Little love hearts for heart version

Small heart:

1. Ch5, join to form ring, 3 dc, 2 hdc, sc ch 2, sc, 2 hdc, 3 dc, ss, break yarn leaving a tail for sewing, and pull yarn through to finish off.

2. Insert hook from back, through centre loop and pull yarn through to the back tie beginning and ending yarn together, trim short strand of beginning yarn and sew to back of elephant using remaining yarn.

Medium heart:

Ch7, join to form ring, 4 tr, 3 dc, 2 hdc, sc ch2, sc, 2 hdc, 3 dc, 4 tr, ss. finish off the same as small heart.

I also used coordinating yarn to stitch around the edges of the heart, for extra pretty.

LEGS x 4

Rnd 1: Ch 5, join to form ring, ch1, 9 sc in ring, join to beg ch1. (10)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same space as beg ch,  2sc in each sc, around, join to beg ch1. (20)

Rnd 3: Ch3, working in back loops only, dc in each sc around, join to 3rd ch of beg ch3. (20)

Rnd 4-6: Ch3, dc in each dc, around, join. (20)

Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff the legs firmly.

Sew legs to base of body evenly, so the elephant stands straight. Make sure the side of each leg where the rounds are joined, face in so you don't see it.

Now it's time to attach head to body making sure that the colours line up for stripey elephant, and plain elephant. You'll attach from round 19 of head and round 6 of body (on the side of body where rounds are joined), covering a good surface area of both the back of the head and front of the body as the head will need this support. The trunk should reach down in line with the bottom of the feet.

TAIL

Ch 13, ss in 2nd ch from hook and each ch along, finish off. Make a small tassel, using just two strands of yarn, and attach to end of tail. Sew onto elephant.

You should now have one beautifully fine elephant to add to your collection of gorgeous yarny babies. Be sure to send a photo of your creation to: shopjammade@gmail.com so I can admire it, and add it to the Jam made album. I hope you have enjoyed the pattern and tutorial. I am happy for you to share the pattern by linking to this page. And always remember, you're welcome to come back anytime!
